Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula (BGCP) proudly stands as the largest expanded learning provider in San Mateo County, dedicated to empowering 6,700 TK-College students across 30 sites from East Palo Alto to Daly City. POSITION OVERVIEW
The Sports Performance Coach will lead an innovative Track & Field Accelerator Program designed to provide middle school students from underserved communities with access to high-quality coaching, performance training, mentorship, and resources that prepare them for success in high school athletics and beyond.
This is more than a coaching position. The Sports Performance Coach will build relationships with student-athletes and families while creating a positive, high-expectation culture centered on discipline, growth, teamwork, and long-term athletic development.
The ideal candidate is passionate about using sport to change lives and enjoys mentoring young athletes both on and off the track.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Coach & Develop Athletes
- Plan and lead engaging practices focused on sprint development (60m–400m) and relays.
- Teach sprint mechanics, acceleration, running technique, and race strategy.
- Lead dynamic warm-ups, mobility, conditioning, and recovery sessions.
- Implement age-appropriate strength and core development.
- Prepare athletes for local competitions.
- Track individual athlete progress throughout the year.
Mentor & Build Relationships
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and accountable team culture.
- Build strong relationships with athletes and families.
- Encourage academic success, leadership, and personal growth.
- Serve as a positive role model for middle school students.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding attendance and athlete development.
Program Coordination
- Assist with seasonal planning and curriculum implementation.
- Coordinate meet registrations and competition logistics.
- Maintain attendance and athlete progress records.
- Help recruit and retain future program participants.
- Collaborate with guest clinicians and community partners.
- Track program outcomes including:
- Athletic performance improvements
- Speed and strength benchmarks
- School sports team placement
- Academic performance and attendance
- Maintain accurate attendance, participation, and progress records.
- Prepare reports and summaries for BGCP leadership and external stakeholders.
- Analyze data to inform continuous program improvement.
Mental Wellness, Nutrition, & Holistic Development
- Coordinate sports psychology and mental health services in partnership with providers and internal BGCP staff.
- Support nutrition education, sleep awareness, and recovery practices.
- Facilitate individual wellness check‑ins and connect students with additional support as needed.
- Create a supportive environment that prioritizes student well‑being and whole‑person development.
Academic Alignment & Family Engagement
- Monitor participants’ academic progress, including GPA and middle school graduation readiness.
- Coordinate academic advising and tutoring support with internal BGCP staff.
- Engage parents and caregivers through education sessions and regular communication.
- Support student‑athletes in securing and maintaining eligibility for school sports teams.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Working towards degree program in relevant field that includes but not limited to Sports Management, Youth Program Development, Kinesiology
- Experience coaching track and field (especially sprints and relays) or another speed-based sport
- Strong understanding of proper movement mechanics and injury prevention
- Experience working with middle or high school aged school athletes
- Passion for working with youth
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics
- Demonstrated organizational, staff, and project management abilities
- CPR and First Aid Certifications recommended (if not, to be completed within 90 days of start date)
- USA Track + Field coaching certificate is strongly preferred
- Spanish speaking strongly preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; and some stooping, kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead, crouching, squatting, and/or crawling. The role also requires significant fine finger dexterity and near vision acuity. The position may occasionally involve lifting or carrying objects up to 25 pounds. Generally, the job requires approximately 20% sitting and 80% walking or standing. The work environment noise level is typically moderate but may occasionally be louder. All requirements are subject to reasonable accommodations.
LOCATION
Redwood City Clubhouse with frequent travel to other Redwood City K-8 sites
WORK SCHEDULE
- Academic Year: Monday – Friday 2:00pm – 7:00pm
- Occasional Competition Saturday: 9:00am - 5:00pm
- Schedules may include occasional competitions, family meetings, or special events
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Employment Status: Part Time, Non-Exempt
- Pay Range: $27.00 - $30.00 per hour, depending on experience (DOE)
- Retirement Benefits: BGCP offers salary contributions to the 401(k) plan
- Comprehensive Paid Time-Off Policy, along with additional benefits
- Sick Time: Part-time employees accrue sick time at a rate of 1 hour for every 20 hours worked, and may use up to 40 hours per year

As part of the hiring process, BGCP requires candidates to complete a LiveScan fingerprinting, background check, tuberculosis (TB) evaluation or test.
