Our client based in West Berkshire is seeking an experienced Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) to join their Mental Health / AMHP Team. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled practitioner to work within a specialist mental health service, supporting adults with complex mental health needs whilst undertaking statutory duties under the Mental Health Act.

The successful candidate will work closely with service users, carers, health professionals, and partner agencies to promote independence, recovery, and positive outcomes through strengths-based and person-centred practice. You will undertake complex assessments, manage risk, lead safeguarding interventions, and provide expert social work and AMHP input within a multidisciplinary environment.

What will your responsibilities be?

Undertaking Approved Mental Health Professional duties in accordance with the Mental Health Act 1983 and associated Codes of Practice.

  • Managing a complex caseload of adults with severe and enduring mental health needs, providing assessment, intervention, and care coordination where required.
  • Completing Care Act 2014 assessments, support planning, reviews, and eligibility assessments.
  • Undertaking Mental Capacity Assessments and applying the Mental Capacity Act 2005, including Best Interest decision-making and Deprivation of Liberty considerations where appropriate.
  • Coordinating and participating in Mental Health Act assessments, ensuring lawful, proportionate, and person-centred interventions.
  • Undertaking safeguarding enquiries and responding to concerns relating to abuse, neglect, self-neglect, exploitation, and risk.
  • Assessing and managing risk through robust assessment and risk management processes.
  • Supporting service users and carers through self-directed support processes, personalisation, and personal budget arrangements.
  • Working collaboratively with NHS services, Community Mental Health Teams, housing providers, voluntary organisations, carers, and families to deliver integrated services.
  • Preparing and presenting high-quality assessments, reports, funding applications, and other statutory documentation.
  • Providing specialist mental health expertise and professional guidance to colleagues and partner agencies.
  • Maintaining accurate and timely case records, reports, and documentation in accordance with legislative and organisational requirements.

Qualifications and Experience:

To be successful in this role you must have;

  • Professional Qualification: MA, BA, BSc in Social Work, Diploma in Social Work, CQSW, or equivalent recognised Social Work qualification.
  • Registration: Must be registered with Social Work England.
  • AMHP Qualification: Must hold a current Approved Mental Health Professional qualification.
  • Experience: Significant experience working within Adult Mental Health Services and undertaking AMHP duties.
  • Legislation Knowledge: Strong understanding of the Mental Health Act 1983, Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, and Adult Safeguarding legislation.
  • Mental Health Experience: Proven experience supporting adults with complex mental health needs and managing high-risk situations.
  • Safeguarding Experience: Experience undertaking safeguarding enquiries and managing risk appropriately.
  • Multi-Agency Working: Ability to work effectively alongside NHS colleagues, community services, housing providers, voluntary sector organisations, and other partner agencies.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent assessment, report-writing, communication, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
  • IT Skills: Competent in the use of electronic recording systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Driving Licence: Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential.
